Community Awareness Briefing to be held in September

The Fulton Police Department will host a Community Awareness Briefing at the end of the month.

The briefing is a two-hour training session to provide members of the local area information about the prevention of targeted violence and terrorism in local communities.

The CAB will begin at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 in Champ Auditorium at Westminster College. No registration is required to attend the event.

Attendees will be provided with information to assist them in understanding the issue of targeted violence and terrorism in the country. Participants will also learn about the available tools to assist in this understanding. Those who attend learn how targeted violence and terrorism can be prevented through mental health, social service and other programs with the local community.

The flier for the CAB states the briefing will inform communities about why violence is chosen as a solution and methods in which one can become involved in prevention efforts.

This CAB has five main objectives, according to the event's flier. The objectives are to: explain the public health approach to violence prevention; provide a description of targeted violence and terrorism within the country; explain the radicalization to violence process; show what local communities can do to prevent violence; and highlight violence prevention programs that are available.

Community Awareness Briefing is an initiative created by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to "help participants develop an understanding of violent extremist recruitment tactics and explore ways to prevent such threats at the local level," according to the DHS website.
