William Woods University celebrated the opening of the Junior Lake walking trail on campus Friday.

WWU President Jeremy Moreland held a ceremony with the board of trustees and the Callaway County Chamber of Commerce to commemorate the opening of the trail.

This marks the completion of phase two of the walking trail, Moreland said. Both sides of Junior Lake now have a walking trail surrounding it. Phase one was completed last fall.

Phase two of the trail is about a mile in length.

Moreland also announced the official name of the trail. WWU held a contest on campus where students and members of the community could give name suggestions for the trail. The most frequently suggested name was the one that was chosen.

Moreland said the walking trail's official name is Screech Trail, named after WWU's owl mascot.

He said he doesn't think the trail will be totally finished, as he thinks the university will find things to add to the trail.
