Luetkemeyer bags brace as Westminster men’s soccer defeats Blackburn

For the first time in five games, Westminster men's soccer won a match as the Blue Jays beat St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Blackburn 4-2 Wednesday in Carlinville, Illinois.

Taking charge of the Blue Jays attack was Adam Luetkemeyer, who netted a brace in 79:58.

Luetkemeyer put Westminster up 1-0 in the 13th minute, scoring the goal unassisted. Just two minutes later, Travis Bieg made it 2-0 Westminster.

At halftime, the Blue Jays were up 2-0, but the Beavers did their best to fight back in the second half.

Westminster extended its lead to three when Niklas Olsson scored off a Nolan Deane assist in the 54th minute.

Soon after, Blackburn responded with two goals.

Levi Yudinsky scored the Beavers' first in the 63rd minute. Only two minutes later, Blackburn's Nicholas Vaugh made it a one-goal game; Jamie Jose-Pineda was credited with the assist.

Blue Jays forward Luetkemeyer finished off his brace and helped secure the victory, with his goal in the 80th minute.

Toby Hughes earned the win in goal for Westminster. He played all 90 minutes, stopping five of the seven shots he faced.

The Blue Jays outshot the Beavers 13-10.

Next up, Westminster (2-8-1, 2-4-1 SLIAC) will play Eureka (4-6, 2-4) at 3 p.m. Saturday in Fulton. The Blue Jays' last victory before Wednesday's match occurred when it won 2-0 at Eureka on Sept. 16.
