A Holts Summit man charged with a Boone County killing earlier this year was denied a request to set bond.
Loyal Martell, 22, was charged in August with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.
The motion to set bond said Martell "remains innocent" in the case, said he was not a danger to the community nor a flight risk, was guaranteed employment if released and would be supervised on home detention by Community Services of Missouri if released. The request for bond reduction was filed last month.
The request was taken up by the court Monday and was denied.
Another hearing was scheduled for next month.
Martell and another suspect were arrested in August after police responded to a report of shots fired in the parking lot of Moser's Grocery Store on North Keen Street in Columbia. A victim died of gunshot wounds on the scene.
According to a probable cause statement, Columbia police identified Martell and the other suspect parked in a vehicle beside the victim through the store's security camera footage. The suspects allegedly entered the victim's vehicle before leaving the parking l0t, and their vehicle's license plates were identified leaving the area an hour after the shooting.
The other suspect was taken into custody in Kirksville and told police they had planned to meet and rob the victim, telling police Martell was the one to fire the shot that killed him, according to the probable cause statement. Martell was subsequently taken into custody through the efforts of the Callaway County Sheriff's Department and the Fulton and Holts Summit police departments.
