New Bloomfield baseball defeats Sturgeon despite allowing 3-run inning

Despite allowing three runs in the fifth inning, New Bloomfield baseball defeated Sturgeon 13-3 Friday in Sturgeon.

The big inning for the Bulldogs came thanks to a single by Marshall Smith and an error on a ball put in play by Josh Kelly.

In the first inning, the Wildcats got their offense started. New Bloomfield scored two runs when Gavin Thomas singled.

The Wildcats put up six runs in the third inning. The offensive onslaught by New Bloomfield was led by Chase Bailey, Braden Jackson, Thomas, Michael Leason and Eli Bailey, who each had RBI in the inning.

Brayden Carroll pitched the Wildcats to victory. The right-hander allowed two hits and three runs over 4 ⅔ innings, striking out six and walking one. Bailey threw ⅓ inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Smith took the loss for Sturgeon. The right-hander surrendered 12 runs on seven hits over three innings, striking out four.

Thomas went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead New Bloomfield in hits. The Wildcats tore up the base paths, as three players stole at least two bases. Bailey led the way with two.

Up next, New Bloomfield (6-8) will play Otterville (2-10) at 5 p.m. Tuesday in New Bloomfield.
