Local groups participate in Giving Tuesday

Local businesses and organizations took part in Giving Tuesday yesterday.

Giving Tuesday is a movement that seeks to inspire generosity and create a world where "generosity is part of everyday life," according to the organization's website.

Giving Tuesday also seeks to "unleash the power of radical generosity around the world," according to the organization's website. Radical generosity is defined by the group as "the concept that the suffering of others should be as intolerable as our own suffering." This year marks the 10th anniversary of Giving Tuesday.

Westminster College and William Woods University both participated in the annual event. For Giving Tuesday, Westminster accepted donations to support the Westminster Fund. This fund helps support the college for the future and supports the education Westminster provides.

Donations to William Woods on Giving Tuesday celebrated the spirit of Dr. William S. Woods and the positive effects of giving, according to the donation page for the university.

Another local group that participated in the annual event was SERVE. On the group's Facebook page, they described what donations can go towards. $1 can provide four meals, $20 covers a round trip to Columbia for a dialysis patient and $100 provides Christmas for a child in need, according to SERVE's Facebook page.

The Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland, which includes Callaway County, participated in Giving Tuesday. The organization accepted donations to continue to support local girls to "gain the tools they need to solve the problems they care about with bold solutions that only they can think up," according to a release.

The Girl Scouts had a donation goal of $5,000 for Giving Tuesday. $200 was raised by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
