The Fulton prosecuting attorney has been charged with assault at a local business.

Fulton Prosecuting Attorney Eric Qualls, 33, was arrested on suspicion of fourth-degree assault Wednesday evening.

According to a statement from the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office, the Fulton Police Department requested the sheriff investigate reports of an assault at a business in the 100 block of East Fifth Street.

FPD officers had identified Qualls as a suspect, and the Police Chief Bill Ladwig requested an outside agency investigate.

A Callaway County Sheriff’s Office criminal investigator took over the investigation.

As a result of the investigation, Qualls surrendered around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

He was booked and processed at the Callaway County Jail on suspicion of fourth-degree assault. He was issued a summons and released pending a court appearance in the 13th Associate Circuit Court of Callaway County on July 8.

The Fulton prosecuting attorney is an elected position.

The investigation is ongoing and additional information was not available.

The story has been changed to correct the charge filed in the case.
