William Woods’ Smith two-time NAIA All-American, finishes 7th at nationals

Logan Smith ended his career in a fitting way Friday.

The William Woods senior finished in a tie for seventh place at the NAIA men’s golf championships at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, to earn his second NAIA All-American status after doing so with a second-place finish last year at nationals.

Smith shot a 281, 3-under par, to tie Embry Riddle’s Trevor Lewis and finish five strokes back of the winner, Keiser University’s Jakob Stavang Stubhaug.

After Day 1 on Tuesday, Smith was in a six-way tie for 18th despite shooting even par on the back nine, with two birdies, and wrapping up his day on the front nine with three more birdies and a score of 70, 1-under par.

Smith moved into the top 10 on Wednesday in a two-way tie for fifth place, making the cut for the next two days, after hitting seven birdies and shooting his best round score of the week at 65, six-under par. He started on the front nine on Day 2, having one bogey but going without a bogey the rest of the day as he sank four birdies in five holes on the back nine.

After Thursday, Smith was three strokes out from first place as he sat in a four-way tie for third. He birdied the 10th hole to start his day, made another birdie on the 14th hole and added a bogey on the 17th hole for a score of 35, 2-under par, through nine. He began the front nine with a birdie before a bogey on the 7th hole and a birdie on the ninth hole to finish with a Day 3 score of 69, 2-under par.

Smith concluded his tournament Friday with his highest score of the week, 77 or 6-over par, after collecting five bogeys and one birdie. The worst bogey occurred on the 15th hole as it took Smith seven strokes to finish the par four. He was 4-over par after the back nine and finished the front nine with a score of 37, 2-over par.
