The William Woods men’s tennis team battled back to tie the score in its first match Tuesday in nationals but fell just short.
The No. 18 men’s season ended after a 4-3 loss to No. 15 College of Coastal Georgia in the NAIA National Championships in Mobile, Alabama. The No. 18 women lost 4-1 to No. 15 Union College at nationals to conclude their season.
The men jumped ahead after winning doubles thanks to a 7-6 win by Vaclav Schneider and Vitek Subert on the No. 1 court and a 6-1 victory by Patrick Shelepov and Robert Schorr in the No. 3 match. They then fell behind 3-1 but came back to tie after a 6-0, 6-4 victory by Schneider on the No. 1 court and a 6-2, 6-2 win by Schorr in the No. 6 match.
Ben Grumley was locked in a close No. 2 match with Lucas Landaluce after winning the first set 7-6 and losing the second set 7-6. Grumley couldn’t hang on as he dropped the final set 6-4.
The men’s final record sits at 13-12.
The women had a win from Ana Zalava and Hanna Lindeboom in the No. 1 doubles match 7-5 but couldn’t win either of the other two to surrender the doubles point. Lillia Komiszar and Hannah Meyer lost a 7-5 match on the No. 3 court.
In singles, Komiszar had the Owls’ only win by a score of 6-4, 6-4 on the No. 5 court. The rest of the team couldn’t win a set outside of Lindeboom on the No. 4 court, only for her match to go as unfinished as Union had clinched the match.
The women’s final record sits at 10-14.
