Three Fulton freshman girls make it to sectionals

A trio of Lady Hornets will be heading to Mexico this Saturday.

Fulton competed at the Class 4 District 4 meet at North Point High School in Wentzville, and three freshman girls qualified for the Class 4 Sectional 2 meet in Mexico. Kenzie Shock advanced in the high jump, Olivia Weaver qualified in the 100-meter hurdles and Emmy Begemann is moving on in the triple jump.

Shock became the first sectional qualifier when she finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.41 meters, edging Hannibal’s Jade Thomas’ 1.41 meters and sitting behind Kirksville’s Esme Aubuchon’s 1.45 meters. Hannibal’s Taegan Novel won the event with a mark of 1.58 meters.

Weaver then raced to a fourth-place time of 18.75 in the 100-meter hurdles. St. Dominic’s Mikayla Dudley sat in fifth place with a time of 19.73, and Hannibal’s Nora Hark had a third-place time of 17.94. Kirksville’s Jersey Herbst won the event with a time of 17.01.

Begemann had Fulton’s best finish of the day by taking third in the triple jump with a mark of 10.09 meters. She finished ahead of Hannibal’s Danica Vohs’ distance of 9.94 meters and was edged by Moberly’s Asa Fanning’s 10.11 meters. Moberly’s Bryleigh Knox won the event with a mark of 10.75 meters.

Begemann came close to qualifying in the long jump as well, finishing fifth with a distance of 4.75 meters. Warrenton’s Garneisha Love took the fourth and final spot with a mark of 4.83 meters.

Freshman Ciera Kelly was a near-miss in the 100-meter dash, taking fifth with a time of 13.53. Hannibal’s Jaylianna LaJoy was fourth with a time of 13.37.

None of the boys qualified for sectionals this week, but a few came close, including senior Jacob Barnes’ fifth-place pole vault of 3.2 meters. St. Dominic’s Noah Sachs took fourth with a height of 3.5 meters.

Senior Dillon Jones and junior Josh Naranich missed qualification in the 300-meter hurdles with respective times of a fifth-place 48.9 and a sixth-place 49.01. St. Dominic’s Matt Povich was fourth with a time of 45.51.

The boys’ 4x400- and 4x800-meter relay teams each finished fifth in their respective races. The girls’ 4x100-meter team finished fifth.

The Fulton boys and girls each finished eighth in the team standings with respective point totals of 39.33 and 39. Hannibal won the boys and girls district titles with respective point totals of 181.33 and 151.
