William Woods baseball earns AMC's Champions of Character Team

William Woods’ baseball team has been named the Conference Commissioner Association Champions of Character Team Award winner for the American Midwest Conference, which was announced Wednesday in a press release.

The Champions of Character Team Award honors one men’s and one women’s team for their exemplary character and sportsmanship on the field, on campus and in the community. The award winner demonstrates the core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

Each AMC member school nominated one men’s and one women’s team which was submitted by the conference office. The AMC Champions of Character Committee is the voting body.

The conference selections will be nominated for the national award as part of the NAIA National Award Program.

The Owls’ baseball team is coached by John Cavness along with assistant Tyler Bracht, graduate assistant Logan Bexten and student manager Zach Leffler.

William Woods’ baseball team volunteered a Mid-Missouri Special Olympics event at South Callaway, providing leadership and mentorship to the students participating in the event from surrounding high schools. The players were responsible for directing traffic and running different event stations.

In addition, the team volunteered twice in the fall assisting Central Christian Church with their “Buddy Pack” program for children in need in all elementary schools in Callaway County. The Owls assisted loading, unloading and distributing the buddy packs.

The team is now eligible for the NAIA CCA Team of Character Award, which will be announced publicly during the NAIA National Awards Day in September. The winner will be presented with a certificate and recognized at an annual function in conjunction with the NAIA National Convention.
