The Fulton City Council recognized local civil rights leader Jack McBride during the June 28 meeting.

Council members unanimously voted to ceremonially designate a section of West Ninth Street, between Westminster Avenue and Jefferson Street, as Jack McBride Way.

McBride served in the U.S. Navy during WWII before returning to Fulton and putting his focus toward civil rights.

He was a founding member of the Fulton NAACP chapter and served as chapter resident for 40 years.

According to the city’s resolution, he led the movement to de-segregate Fulton Public Schools as well as integration of Fulton businesses and schools.

Along with those efforts, McBride developed the Youth Life Improvement Association, which focused on providing opportunities, training, mentoring and life skills programs for young men and women, and their families.

McBride was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church for 80 years and served the congregation in various roles over the years.

According to the resolution, he is regarded as a “church treasure” due to his support of the ministry and involvement in the community.

Along with the resolution, the city will place signs at three different spots along the section of West Ninth Street that is now named for McBride.

In other business, the council:

• Authorized the city to participate in the Missouri Firefighters Critical Illness Trust and Pool.

• Repealed the competitive bidding subsection in city code.

• Amended the city’s 2021 budget for transfers of appropriations.

• Rezoned of a tract of land located in the 10 block of Arrow Street from R-1 Residential to R-3 Residential.
