MOKANE, Mo. -- The South Callaway R-2 School District approved the budget for the 2022-23 school year during Monday's board of education meeting.

South Callaway Superintendent Kevin Hillman said he thinks the budget is strong and it will protect the future.

Funds for buses will total $160,000, with the potential for electric buses from additional grants.

"We're in good shape," Hillman said.

The budget reflects raises and salary increases for all certified and classified personnel.

Hillman said he does worry about the future, but is very comfortable where the district is.

"It is the most unsure year for future budgets that there could be with all of the changes," Hillman said.

One of the changes could be the potential for teachers' salaries to increase.

The possible legislation for a $38,000 minimum salary for teachers will have a huge impact on future budget planning, he said.

The school district can't afford to raise teachers' salaries now, but would like to in future years.

Hillman said what happens to assessed valuation and possibility of legislative teacher wages will be a big predictor in where the district goes with their plans.

The district has also spent significant money on improvements while keeping fund balances high.
