The Fulton City Council approved a change to the city's trash ordinance Tuesday night.

Under this change, residents will be required to bring trash containers away from the curb within 24 hours of collection.

The Council approved the change unanimously after hearing concerns from a Fulton resident.

Catherine Goser approached the Council about the change, voicing concern that some residents -- such as those with disabilities -- could struggle with being able to remove the cans.

Assistant Director of Administration Robert Boone said if residents make the city aware of that kind of situation, the workers who staff the garbage trucks will move containers for them.

Goser also said she knows people in her neighborhood who leave their cans by the side of the road in an effort to deter issues such as speeding.

The ordinance will be enforced based on resident reporting, Director of Administration Renee Taylor said. It isn't practical for the police department to try and enforce it, she explained, but the city can respond if other residents call in about an issue.

However, she said, she'd like city staff to meet with Goser to further discuss speeding in her area and see whether the city might be able to do something like put in speed bumps that would better deter speeding than leaving their cans out.

Taylor said the goal of the ordinance is to improve safety along the roads and present a cleaner image of the city.
