Owls women’s tennis takes home postseason honors

The William Woods women’s tennis team won six out of the nine Intercollegiate Tennis Association central regional awards, which were announced Thursday.

Owls coach Chance Joost was honored with the Wilson ITA Coach of the Year award, Rukshika Wijesooriya received the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award and ITA Most Improved Senior, Hanna Lindeboom took home ITA Rookie of the Year, Anna Zavala won ITA Senior Player of the Year and the William Woods team received ITA Community Service Award honorable mention.

Joost guided the Owls to an American Midwest Conference championship and finished the season with an 11-13 record.

On the season, Wijesooriya went 11-8 in singles play and 12-10 in doubles play.

Wijesooriya won five straight doubles matches from Feb. 25-March 9; one of those wins came against No. 14 Cumberlands.

Wijesooriya was also named to the American Midwest Conference/Heart of America Athletic Conference singles first team and doubles second team.

In her first season, William Woods’ Lindeboom went 16-12 in singles play and 23-9 in doubles play.

The ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year was also included in the AMC/Heart singles second team and doubles first team.

For her fifth and final season, Zavala went 18-11 in singles action and 22-9 in doubles play.

Zavala won seven singles and doubles matches against NAIA Top 25 opponents.

Not only did Zavala receive ITA Central Region Senior Player of the Year, but she was also named AMC/Heart Player of the Year and made the AMC/Heart singles and doubles first team.
