Fulton girls fall 60-15 to Centralia in tourney

The Hedgpaths were back on court Monday for the Fulton girls.

They led the way for the Lady Hornets, but it wasn’t enough as they lost their first-round game in the Harrisburg Tournament to Centralia 60-15.

Sophomores Jayna Hedgpath and Sam Hedgpath were the leading scorers for Fulton (4-10), finishing with seven and four points, respectively.

Fulton coach Matt Wilbers said while the team has seen the return of leading scorer Kiah Pittman and now the Hedgpaths, the Lady Hornets still aren’t at full strength. He said sophomore Kier Henderson is still recovering from an ankle injury and hopes she is able to return this week, but the team isn’t rushing it.

The current Fulton girls roster fell behind 19-3 to the Centralia (7-4) 19-3 after the first quarter and then trailed 37-6 at halftime. The Lady Panthers had a 52-9 lead after three, thanks partly to leading scorer Baylee Beard with 11 points.

After observing Fulton play several quality teams consecutively -- Fulton played six straight double-digit win teams prior to Centralia -- Wilbers said the Lady Hornets need to make sure they are good on a few things even when the full roster is back.

“We’re close to back where we want to be,” Wilbers said. “We just got to get consistent shooting back and win a ballgame to get our confidence back. We’re competing well but have played really good teams in a row.”

Fulton plays Fayette at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the middle school in the consolation bracket.
