The Hornets and Ladybirds flew around the course Saturday at the Fulton Cross Country Invitational.
The Fulton boys finished fifth as a team, with 164 points, and were led by junior medalist Carter Meyerhoff, who finished in 10th with a 19:00.34. The North Callaway girls would also round out the top five, with 134 points, and were led by their sophomore medalist Pressley Schmauch, who finished fifth individually with a 21:55.34.
On the men's side, Fulton senior Kai Foster was the closest of the two Callaway County teams to Meyerhoff in 32nd at 20:04.84. Senior Hornet Shaun Wolfe wasn't too far behind in 39th at 20:18.07, and sophomore Devon Merritt was the last Hornet to crack the top 50 in 50th at 20:42.90. Junior Brendan Reinhard was North Callaway's fastest boy in 57th at 20:58.66.
Schmauch was North Callaway's lone medalist, but the Ladybirds had three finish close together around the top 30 in senior Piper Jeffries, 30th at 25:16.42; senior Rachael Jeffries, 31st at 25:17.64; and senior Lydia Backer, 34th at 25:45.10. Fulton junior Jonna Vanzetti was the fastest Lady Hornet in 64th at 28:23.03 and was just ahead of sophomore Ladybird Caitlyn Sobba in 63rd at 28:15.71. Sophomore Emily Boyd was the second fastest Lady Hornet in 67th at 28:44.13.
Fulton will run Saturday in the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, and North Callaway will run Oct. 2 at the T-Bird Invite.
