College Baseball: Westminster dominates DH vs. Iowa Wesleyan

The Westminster Blue Jays took three out of four games in their weekend series against the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers, sweeping Sunday's doubleheader by scores of 10-4 and 13-2 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Saucier Field.

Following Saturday's doubleheader split on Senior Day, Westminster pushed three runs across the plate in the first inning of Sunday's opener. Hunter Mulholland hit a sacrifice fly to center field, then Coltin Green hit a two-run double to center field to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead.

Ben Park hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to add to the lead, then Westminster scored three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Mulholland drove in a run in both innings for the Blue Jays.

Green and Mulholland each had a team-high three RBI for Westminster. Derek Shikles (New Bloomfield High School) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and three runs scored, while Hayden Hirschvogel added two singles and one RBI.

Dawson Koch was the winning pitcher for the Blue Jays. In 5 innings, he allowed four runs on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Bode Gebbink pitched the last 1 innings, walking three and striking out two.

Westminster scored two or more runs in five of the seven innings in Game 2, winning by run-rule.

The Blue Jays belted four home runs in the win, starting with a solo shot by Steven Diaz to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Mulholland hit a two-run shot to right field in the fifth, Parker Schnieders hit a two-run blast to left field in the seventh and Shikles walked it off with a three-run homer to left later in the seventh.

Shikles, Hulholland and Green each had three RBI in the win. Shikles went 3-for-5 at the plate, while Payton Whitehead, Mulholland, Green and Schnieders each had two hits.

Trent Morrow pitched a complete game to improve his season record to 2-1. In seven innings, Morrow allowed two runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Erik Kiewiet hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for Iowa Wesleyan (4-10, 4-10 SLIAC).

Westminster (14-14, 10-10 SLIAC), which has won four of its last six games, will host another conference four-game series against Spalding, starting with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is at noon.
