The Blue Jays wasted an 11-point lead midway through the second half in falling to the Gorloks with less than a minute to play in Wednesday night's SLIAC home loss.
Westminster College trailed 35-34 at halftime, but produced a 15-5 run to build its double-digit lead in the second half. Sophomore forward Steven Brandt's layup gave the Blue Jays a 61-50 lead with 10 minutes, 50 seconds left in the game.
Webster University gradually chipped away at Westminster's advantage and went in front in dramatic fashion. Josh Johnson's layup with :15 to go put the Gorloks on top to stay at 75-74.
Blake Ferrell sealed Webster's comeback by hitting two free throws with :02 remaining.
The Blue Jays - who were swept in the season series by the Gorloks - suffered their second straight loss in dropping to 10-12 on the season and 9-6 in the SLIAC. Webster is now 16-5 overall and tied with Greenville (Illinois) University for first place in the conference at 12-2.
"This was a great game ," Westminster head coach Matt Mitchell said. "Our guys played their hearts out against the best team in the league. It came down to a couple of key possessions and we couldn't hit a key shot or get a key stop.
"The good news is that the loss did not impact our position in the conference and we still control our own destiny."
Senior forward Stu Hollandsworth and junior guard Kobe Wands logged 18 points apiece to pace the Blue Jays, who shot 46 percent (30-of-66) as a team. Senior forward Romo Tabb provided 16 points.
Nigel Wilcox delivered a game-high 19 points to lead four players in double figures for the Gorloks, who shot 53 percent (31-of-59) from the field. Josh Johnson and Aron Hopp finished with 13 points apiece and Rodson Etienne had 12.
Westminster wraps up its regular-season home schedule with a SLIAC matchup against Principia (Illinois) College at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Blue Jays overpowered Principia 68-47 on Jan. 8 in Elsah, Illinois.
