Boys' basketball: Newburg 46, New Bloomfield 40

JEFFERSON CITY - The Wildcats were outscored by the Wolves 18-12 in the second quarter of Friday night's season-opening loss in the Frisco League/Show-Me Conference Shootout.

Newburg used its strong second quarter to transform a 5-4 edge into a 23-16 halftime advantage over New Bloomfield. Both teams produced eight points in the third quarter as the Wolves maintained a 31-24 lead.

Senior forward Clayton Martin paced the Wildcats with a game-high 18 points.

"I was proud how hard the kids played defensively," New Bloomfield head coach Tim Gilmore said. "We had a lot of new faces step on the varsity floor for the first time and they played well together and relaxed."

Hunter Mentola led Newburg with 17 points.

The Wildcats face Calvary Lutheran in their home opener at 6 tonight.
