Clapp, Owls cruise past Culver-Stockton in 8-1 victory

William Woods breaks out for season-high 15 hits

Senior third baseman Austin Clapp had three hits and drove in three runs to spark a season-high 15-hit rampage as the William Woods University Owls ripped Culver-Stockton College 8-1 on Tuesday.

Six players had multiple hits in the non-conference romp for William Woods (15-5), winners of two straight. The Owls - who overcame four errors - put up three runs in the top of the second inning, two more in the third and one each in the fourth, sixth and ninth.

Clapp went 3-for-4, driving in runs with a bases-loaded walk in the second, a double in the fourth and a single in the sixth. Senior right fielder Nick Spagnola was also 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, while sophomore second baseman Alex St. Pierre finished 3-for-5 and scored a run.

Junior left fielder Larry Price went 2-for-3 and scored once, while senior shortstop Stephen Kohler finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore designated hitter Konrad Kemper - a South Callaway graduate - was 1-for-5 with a two-run double in the third. William Woods stranded nine baserunners.

Senior Ryan Yuengel, the second of four pitchers for the Owls, didn't allow a hit over two scoreless innings to pick up the victory. Yuengel (3-0) struck out one and issued three walks.

Culver-Stockton (4-16) managed just six hits and tallied its lone run in the fifth. The Wildcats left 11 runners on base.

William Woods returns to American Midwest Conference play when it opens a three-game home series against Williams Baptist (Arkansas) College with a nine-inning game at 6 p.m. Friday. The two teams will then play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Owls are 3-2 in the AMC.
