Fulton hosts 18th Relay for Life event

Bill Moore surprised his wife, Gayle with a quilt he won for her during a live auction at the Relay For Life event, Saturday. The quilt, which featured t-shirt designs from Fulton's Relay events from the past, sold for $340.

Moore's company Bill Moore Concrete Construction donated $1,800 after 18 Relay committee members died their hair pink prior to the event. The money went to cancer research.

"I've seen a lot of things happen in the 20 years I've been with Relay For Life," Relay Event Leader Linda Bosher said. "I've had my heart broken and spirit fly."

Community members attended the Relay event at Callaway County Electric from 12 p.m.-12 a.m. and helped raise money for a "super heroic" fight against cancer. Relay Event Leader Linda Bosher hoped to raise $50,000 by the end of the event.

That morning already $23,467 had been raised, she said.

Boyd & Boyd, which had a "campground" at the event, raised money by preparing and providing lunches to state hospital employees. At $5 a lunch, Boyd & Boyd exceeded its $1,500 goal in four months.

Last year's event raised $52,000 making it the only Relay event in the area to go over its goal, Bosher said. Not only was it an opportunity for donors to help fund the American Cancer Society, it was also an opportunity to honor survivors, Relay Community Manager Joy Shawley said.

During the event attendants walked the Survivor and Caregiver Laps, participated in both the silent and live auction, competed in the super hero contest and attended the Luminaria Ceremony. Children in attendance also competed in the super hero contest and for $0.50 could jump in the bounce house provided by Boyd & Boyd. Children also got the chance to become familiar with ambulances, firetrucks and police cruisers during the "Touch a Truck" event.
