Coleman's four wins help T-Birds share MSD title

Senior Steven Coleman collected victories in four events Thursday in powering the North Callaway track and field team to a share of the boys' team championship at the 28th-annual Missouri School for the Deaf Invitational in Fulton.

In the girls' division, junior Skylar Schmauch posted a second-place finish and her sister - freshman Reyna - took third in a pair of events as North Callaway came in fourth overall.

Coleman triumphed in the 100 and 200 meters with respective times of 11.84 and 24.09 seconds, while adding wins in the 110 hurdles (:15.74) and 300 (:42.78) hurdles. Both the Thunderbirds and Hermann amassed 74 points to split the team title to edge past second-place Russellville (73).

Sophomore Levi Gilman came in second behind Coleman in the 110 hurdles (:17.59) and was fourth in the 300 hurdles (:47.02). Gilman was also a member of North Callaway's 400 relay - along with junior William Crawford, freshman Skyler Barker and junior Manzell Payne - that took fourth in 1:43.62.

Payne provided a third-place finish in the triple jump (38 feet, 8 1/2 inches) and came in fourth in the high jump (5-4).

The 400 relay of Baker, freshman D'Anthony Kemp, Crawford and senior Mason Trams finished second in :48.80.

Skylar Schmauch took second in the 3,200 (13:42.02), while Reyna Schmauch placed third in both the 800 (2:46.68) and 1,600 (6:09.05) as the Ladybirds compiled 46.5 points. Glasgow secured the girls' team championship with 139 points, followed by Russellville in second (101) and Linn third (51.5).

Freshman Kyla Bertschinger also placed fourth in the long jump (13-5 1/2) for North Callaway and freshman Carley VanBoening tied for sixth in the pole vault (6-0).

The Ladybirds' 400 relay of Bertschinger, junior Patri Eckert, freshman Kallie Jo Lehenbauer and sophomore Jaclyn McMurtry came in second in 2:00.78. Bertschinger, Lehenbauer and McMurtry also teamed with freshman Alyssa Moore to finish third in the 400 relay (:58.00).

The 800 sprint medley relay of VanBoening, junior Lacy Morland, Bertschinger and Moore took fourth in 2:11.89.

Senior Benson Goodwin won the high jump (5-10) and placed sixth in the 300 hurdles (:49.17) as the MSD boys finished 12th with 14 points. Junior Joseph Allen came in fifth in the high jump (5-2) and junior Noe Garcia finished sixth in the discus (94-1).

Sophomore Elizabeth Harrison placed fourth in the 400 (1:07.88) and was sixth in both the 200 (:31.01) and long jump (13-2) as the MSD girls were 14th with six points.

The North Callaway boys and girls compete at Centralia, respectively, on Monday and Tuesday. Both meets start at 4 p.m.

MSD competed at Russellville on Saturday. Results were not available at press time. The Eagles and Lady Eagles travel to Belle at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16.
