Alexus Fields, 10, laughs as her grandmother, Sharon Harris, ties her Native American style head band Friday at South Callaway Elementary School during fourth grade Native American project presentations. The heritage of the granddaughter and grandmother can be traced back to the Cherokee Indians, Harris said. Her great, great grandmother walked the Trail of Tears with her children. By telling the story of their heritage, Harris said her and Fields were able to send a message to the other children throughout the school. “Being proud of who you are, who you were, who your ancesters were,” Harris said.
