Gene Austin, 83, of Williamsburg, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at his home. He was born February 23, 1930, in Williamsburg, the son of the late William Everett Austin and the late Pearl Leota (Chism) Austin. On December 27, 1951, he was united in marriage to Virginia Joyce (Jatho) Austin. Following graduation from Fulton High School in 1949, Gene proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a rural mail carrier in Williamsburg for 17 years and farmed all of his adult life. He was a member of Old Auxvasse Nine Mile Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. He recently received the Evelyn Bedell Award for significant service to the church and community. He was on the Kingdom Telephone Board of Directors from 1968 until his passing, having never missed a meeting, and served as President from 1975 until 2003. He was also involved with the Auxvasse Senior Citizen Board, Williamsburg Community Center, Soils and Crop Conference past President, Callaway County ASCS Community Committee, and a member and past President of the Williamsburg C-4 School Board. In 1988, he was the President of the Kingdom of Callaway Supper. Gene enjoyed spending time with family and was extremely proud of his 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He enjoyed Farmall antique tractors, old thresher's reunions, bluegrass music, and time spent around the stove at Crane's Store. Gene's memory will be cherished by his wife of 62 years, Joyce; four daughters, Brenda Boulware (Mike) of Hatton, Mo., Beverly Guastadisegni (Joe) of Oak Hills, Calif., Melody Krampe (Jim) of Williamsburg, Mo., Cathy Crisp (Phillip) of Auxvasse, Mo.; 13 grandchildren, Jody Miller (Cory), Stephen Boulware (Rachel), Troy Boulware (Christy), Joy Vincent (Mitch), Anthony Guastadisegni (Jessica), Luke Guastadisegni, Merry Guastadisegni, Tyler Krampe (Abby), Eric Krampe, Hannah Krampe, Jordan Crisp, Moriah Crisp and Trevor Crisp; 11 great-grandchildren, Corynne and Cade Miller; Peyton, Blake and Reese Boulware; Nolan, Landon, and Lila Boulware; and Faith, Justus, and Hope Vincent; sister, Leota Mae Baber (Jesse); brother, Leslie Clay Austin (Brenda); two sisters-in-law, Helen Austin and Mirofora Jatho; brother-in-law, Luther Lee Jatho (Nella); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Johnny and Leland Austin; one sister, Joan Austin Gowin; and one brother-in-law, Glen Jatho. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Maupin Funeral Home with Reverend Jim Cruickshank officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday January 24, 2014, at Maupin Funeral Home. Interment will be in Callaway Memorial Gardens.
