William Butler

1936 - 2013

Rev. William F. Butler Sr., age 77, of Kingdom City, Mo., passed into the loving arms of our Lord on Saturday, October 26, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. William was born in Hatton-McCredie, Mo. on August 25, 1936, to Homer Butler Sr. and Orphia Mae (Scott) Butler, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Boopie Jean Graves of the home in 1955. To that union four children were born: one son, Rev. William Butler Jr. (Rhonda), of Columbia, Mo.; three daughters. Loretta Jean Galbreath of Jackson Miss., Shirley Ann Harrison (Rev. Ted Harrison) of Lake Ozark, Mo., Mildred Ann Lee of Fulton, Mo. William blessed the community through his preaching and teaching as pastor at 2nd Missionary Baptist Church of Auxvasse, Mo. and the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church of Centralia, Mo. He was a lifetime member of the Mt. Carmel District where he served 20 years as Executive Secretary. He possessed a huge heart for the Laymen & Jr. Laymen Ministry. Most recently his service had been as Associate Minister of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where he became lovingly known as Father Butler and many members sought out and looked forward to his imparting spiritual wisdom to them. William attended Hatton-McCredie school district. In 2001, William received his Bachelors of Arts degree from Western Baptist Bible College. Just prior to receiving his BA he was honored with receiving the Dale Carnegie Certification for Effective Speaking and Human Relations. He was employed for a number of years at A.B. Chance, Harbison Walker Refractory and Fulton State Hospital. William will always be remembered as the preacher with the large bass voice of the Harmonizers, the gospel singing group he shared with his brothers. William is also survived by three sisters, Juanita Butler, Barbara Butler, both of Fulton, Darlene Butler of Columbia, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Josephine Butler of Kansas City and Eunice Garrett of Kingdom City; three brothers, Rev. Gene Butler (Evelyn) of Columbia, Mo., Rev. Harold Butler (Marva) of St. Louis, Mo., Rev. Homer Butler Jr. (Robin) of Des Moines, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Essie Johnson, Dorothy Graves; one sister-in-law, Florence , two brothers Rev. Jessie Butler and Rev. James Butler. One of his favorite scriptures is Proverbs 3:5-6 which reminds us to Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding; in all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths. These words describe Father Butler's legacy. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sat., Nov 2, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Fulton with Rev. Harold Butler officiating. Burial will follow in Callaway Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at the church.
