Dr. David A. Rice, 70, of Mexico, died at 10:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 20, 2012, at University Hospital in Columbia. David was born on June 21, 1941, in Lebanon, Mo., a son of Wilby A. and Bonnie (Scrivener) Rice. On May 24, 1975, at Richland Baptist Church, he was married to Linda Pope. Linda survives at the home in Mexico. David served his country in the US Army during the Viet Nam war. He graduated from Camdenton High School, received his Master of Education and Educational Specialist degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and his Doctor of Theology from Christian Bible College and Seminary in Kansas City, Mo. During his high school years he worked with Welker and Weightman Construction Company helping build several buildings at Windemere Baptist Assembly in Roach, Mo. Over the years David taught vocal and instrumental music at various Missouri schools, including Fulton High School, Community R-VI, Missouri Military Academy, and he served as the Chairman of the music Department at Hannibal LaGrange College for six years. He was store manager in Mexico at Heilig Meyers Furniture Store for six years. He was currently serving as Pastor at Littleby Baptist Church north of Mexico. David was a very active contributing member of his community and with his faith. He was involved with Kiwanis, Jaycees, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, York Rite, American Red Cross State Service Council, Fulton CTA, Phi Mu Alpha Symphonium Music Fraternity. He had served as the Chairman of the Departments of Music Colleges and Universities, President Elect of College Music Education Teachers, President of N.E. District of American Choral Directorís Association, and chairman for Government Relations for the Missouri Music Educators Association. He had served as director of the Mid-America Corral which toured Europe performing in cathedrals. He had gone on medical missions to the Philippines, to Canada to preach in several Baptist Churches in the Toronto area, and on mission trips to Berlin, El Salvador, Nassau, Bahamas and India. He had also been given the honor of being a Kentucky Colonel. David enjoyed fly fishing, hunting, and being with his family. His passion was serving the Lord. In addition to his wife Linda, survivors include three sons, James D. Rice and wife Kim, OíFallon, Richard A. Rice, Hannibal, and Paul E. Rice and wife Elizabeth, Bolivar; one daughter, Kathryn Westphal and husband Justin, Columbia; 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Patricia Jo Rice, and one brother Paul Edward Rice. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at Richland Baptist Church, Kingdom City, Mo., with Rev. Larry Paris officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5 - 8 p.m. at Pickering Funeral Home in Mexico. Burial with Military Honors will be in Richland Baptist Church cemetery.
