Martha Jean Berry

1916 - 2011

Martha Jean Berry, 95, a former art teacher with the Fulton Public Schools, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at her residence in Carthage, Missouri with her daughter at her side.
Jean was born on August 14, 1916, in Macomb, Illinois. Her parents were Ernest and Hallie (Rogers) Switzer.
Jean graduated from Western Illinois University, and then earned her graduate degree in Art from the University of Missouri. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi (Honorary Society) in college. Jean was chosen to work on the Missouri High School State Art Education curriculum.
Jean was an Art Teacher for the Fulton Public Schools, starting in 1953. She traveled between all the grade schools, as well as Junior High and High School on a daily basis. She eventually wound up as the “Full time” Art Teacher at the High School. She retired from teaching in 1978.
She served two terms as an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Fulton. She was a member of the Fulton Weaver’s Guild, Delta Kappa Gamma and Chapter KE of the P.E.O. Jean also designed and worked on paraments or Church vestments for the Presbyterian Church and also for the historic Christopher Wren Church at Westminster College for which she was made a Fellow of Westminster College.
Jean married Dr. Howard D. Berry (Optometrist) in September 30, 1939, in Macomb, Ill. Dr. Berry died in September, 1980.
She is survived by their three children, Stephen Berry and his wife, Joann, Longview, Washington, a daughter, Susan Bewick and her husband, Tom, Carthage, Missouri, and Richard Berry and his wife Deborah, Augusta, Missouri.
She had seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, and one deceased.
Jean had one sister, Marjorie, who preceded her in death.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 – 1:00 p.m. the day of the service.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage. Rev. Steve Wilson will officiate.
The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service. Services in Fulton, Missouri will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 5, 2011, at the Fulton Presbyterian Church, Fulton, Mo. Rev. Joe Reggin will officiate.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Fulton.
