Karl Stephen Baker

May 18, 1929 - November 25, 2011

Mr. Karl Stephen Baker, age 82 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Friday, November 25, 2011, at Capital Region Medical Center. Karl was born May 18, 1929, in Cedar City, Mo., the son of Elmer and Lottie Mae Steinmetz Baker. He was married on March 11, 1950, in New Bloomfield, Mo., to Betty Jean Hickman, who preceded him in death on February 13, 2004. A lifelong resident of the central Missouri area, Karl was a 1947 graduate from New Bloomfield High School, New Bloomfield, Mo. Karl worked on his family farm from 1939 until 1947. From 1947 until 1948, he was employed with the International Shoe Factory. From 1948 until 1949, he was employed in construction of a new highway in Elko, Nevada. From 1949 until his retirement in 1986, he was employed with Missouri Power and Light and later Union Electric. He began as a ditch digger, pipefitter, equipment operator, meter reader, serviceman and for the last 10 years, he was the superintendent of the gas department. He was a charter member of Concord Baptist Church. Karl enjoyed fishing, metal detecting, collecting shells, mushroom hunting, but most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include: one daughter, Karla Sue Prosser of Holts Summit, Mo.; one son, Stephen Wayne Baker and his wife Carolyn of Columbia, Mo.; two brothers, Harry Ray Baker and his wife Martha Sue of Holts Summit, Mo. and Roger Gene Baker and his wife Janice of Holts Summit, Mo.; one sister, Carrie Mae Berry of New Bloomfield, Mo.; five grandchildren, Stephen Perrey of Columbia, Mo., Magen Gicinto and her husband Nick of San Diego, Calif., Natalie Baroli and her husband Hayes of Columbia, Mo., Rachael Gilbane and her husband Grant of Columbia, Mo., and Jessica Lairmore and her husband Derek of Millersburg, Mo.; five great-grandchildren, Ava Perrey, Jacksen Gicinto, Madison Baroli, Jesse Wedekind, and C.J. Lairmore. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and two brothers, Elmer August Baker Jr. and Charles William Baker. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., Monday, November 28, 2011. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at the Concord Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Monte Shinkle officiating. Interment will be at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Concord Baptist Church or the New Bloomfield High School Alumni Association.
