Charles E. McCuine, 88, a retired Marine Corps Sergeant Major, died Friday, October 21, 2011, at Fairfax Hospital. He lived in Woolbridge, Va., for over 40 years. He was born in New Florence, Mo, the son of Thomas E. McCuine and Clara N. Thompson. After graduating from Fulton High School, Fulton, Mo., Sgt. Maj. McCuine served with the Marine Corps in the South Pacific in World War II and participated in the Solomon islands and Marianas campaigns. He served in China following the end of the war and at various stations in the United States; including Marine Barracks, 8th & Eye Sts., Washington, DC. He earned five battle stars for service in the Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian campaigns. After retiring from the Marine Corps, Sgt. Maj. McCuine worked at the Marine Corps Headquarters for 19 years as a civilian employee. He leaves his wife, Phyllis E. (Preston) McCuine, and numerous nephews and nieces. A graveside service will be held in Millbury, Mass. at a later date.
