Thomas A. "Tom" Houf, 64, of Boonville, Mo., passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011, at University Medical Center in Columbia Mo., as a result of a massive stroke he suffered on Monday evening. Tom was born in Fulton, Mo., the son of James Addison Houf and Mildred Lorene Thomas Houf. He was introduced to Janie Ellis by a mutual friend and they were married six months later, on October 9, 1993, in Hickory, N.C. Mr. Houf had been a teacher at Boonville Correctional Center for more than 20 years, until his retirement in May of this year. He had been a teacher in the Callaway School system for several years until his move to Boonville. He served his country with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, with the Army Airborne Division. Mr. Houf was a very active member of the Gideon Society in Boonville and was a member of the First Christian Church in Boonville. Tom had an extensive collection of fountain pens and military memorabilia. Tom is survived by his wife, Janie, of the home; by his brother, Richard Bruce Houf, of Fulton, Mo.; and his sister, Janice Marie Houf, of St. Louis, Mo. Visitation for Mr. Houf will be held at David Funeral Chapel on Sunday, August 28, 2011, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Unity Baptist Church in Fulton, Mo., at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 29, 2011, with the Reverend Dan Crum officiating. Burial will follow in Callaway Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Boonville, Mo., at the First Christian Church.
