Ethel G. (Schmid) Mirts, 98, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 2, 2019, surrounded by her family at Valley Park North in Fulton, Missouri. Ethel was born September 25, 1920, in Portland, Missouri, the daughter of the late Adolph C. and Nancy On January 16, 1942, she was united in marriage to Marshall Wayne Mirts in Jefferson City, Missouri. He preceded her in death on September 5, 2002, after 60 years of marriage. Early in their marriage they lived briefly on both coasts while Wayne was in the Navy during World War II. They lived on their farm in the Hams Prairie community for 35 years before moving to Fulton in 1989. Ethel was active on the farm, gardening, raising chickens, and milking cows while Wayne worked at Harbison Walker. She was an active member of the Hams Prairie Christian Church, including teaching Sunday School and Bible School. In later years, when she lived in Fulton, she attended the Court Street United Methodist Church. She was an active 4-H leader, a volunteer in the gift shop at the Callaway Hospital, and worked at the elections for several years. She enjoyed being with her family, watching Cardinal baseball, embroidering tea towels for family and friends, doing jig-saw puzzles, playing cards and writing personalized poems in birthday cards for family. Benefiting from a corneal transplant in 2008, she was able to continue these activities. She is survived by her daughter, Marsha Mirts Clingman and husband Jay of Holts Summit, Missouri; three granddaughters, Susan (Ron) Mason of Linn Creek, Missouri, Sarah (Jon) Glass of Ashland, Missouri and Leah (Haze) Wright of Taos, Missouri; seven great-grandchildren, Garrett, Joel and Chase Mason, Baden and Emma Glass, and Alison and Sam Wright. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Dorothy Schmid, Dorothy Norris, June Pinkerton and Faye Gowin and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Herbert, Albert and Calvin Schmid; and three sisters, Clara Elsenrath, Julia Craghead and Dorothy Haxton. Funeral services will be officiated by Pastor Bruce Williamson at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at Debo Funeral Home in Fulton. Entombment will follow at Callaway Memorial Gardens. The family will receive guests from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hams Prairie Christian Church or Court Street United Methodist Church.
