Rovena Beryl Shepherd, age 85, of Mokane, passed away Monday, January 29, 2018, at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. Rovena was born on January 14, 1933, in Flemington, Missouri. She was a daughter of the late Torrence and Maudie Lee (Stephenson) McBride. On February 14, 1952, Rovena was united in marriage to Jackie Dean Shepherd who preceeded her in death. Rovena taught school for over 30 years. She started the first ever kindergarten in Auxvasse, Missouri. From 1960-1965, Rovena was a school teacher at Oak Grove school near Fulton, Missouri teaching grades 1 through 8 while furthering her education at Lincoln University in the evening. In August of 1966, she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Rovena continued her studies by completing a Masters of Education degree in June of 1971, at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. In 1966, she started teaching at South Callaway R-II School in Mokane. Rovena retired from there in 1992. After her retirement she continued to substitute teach because of her love to educate students. Rovena and her husband owned and operated the Steedman General Store in Steedman from 1973-1978. Rovena had many hobbies she enjoyed over the years; sewing, gardening, horseback riding, traveling, and mineral and gem collecting. She was a past member of Mokane Eastern Star. Rovena was also a member of the Hams Prairie Christian church. Survivors include; three daughters, Teresa (Charlie) Pritchard of Jefferson City, Vivian (Harry) Edwards of Mokane, Linda (Angel) Davila of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; one son, Steve Shepherd of Steedman; grandchildren, LeAnn (Chris) Cash, Matt (Rachel) Pritchard, Becky (Scott) Smail, Brian (Kelsey) Edwards; great-grandchildren, Tanner Mertens, Megan Mertens, Mickie Cash, Cohen Cash, Landen Pritchard, Austin Pritchard, Ethan Pritchard, Olivia Smail, Madelyn Smail, Nash Block; two brothers-in-law, Billy Rae and Jerry Shepherd; sisters-in-law, Barbara Hardman, and Jane Shepherd. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Wanda Peck; five brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law. A celebration of her life by the family will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements are under the direction and care of Heartland Cremation of Columbia, Missouri.
