Howard F. Nickelson

Howard F. Nickelson, 85, of Fulton, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2017, at Heisinger Bluffs in Jefferson City. He was born in Stephens, Missouri on September 23, 1931, the son of the late Albert L. Nickelson and the late Jettie F. (Gowin) Nickelson. On May 17, 1953, Howard was united in marriage to Trixie (McClellan) Nickelson. She survives his passing. Howard was a graduate of Fulton High School. Making a vow to protect and serve, he spent the majority of his career in law enforcement, working as a Police Officer in Fulton and Mexico and serving as Marshall in Auxvasse. Howard finished his career working as a Security Officer at Fulton State Hospital. Howard and Trixie also owned Nickelson Home Improvement and Nickelson Home Rental in Fulton. Howard was involved in the Auxvasse Lions Club and served as Chairman of the Lions Club 4-H Fair. Howard was also an active member of the Fulton Breakfast Lions Club, serving as founding President and District Governor. He was recognized for his dedication to the organization as recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. For 40 years, he served as Board President of the Oak Chapel Cemetery Board. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Trixie; sons, Dennis Nickelson (Nancy) of Jefferson City, and Ricky H. Nickelson (Paula) of Fulton; daughters, Maurita Buhl (Howard) of Edgerton, and Sharon Stites (Eddie) of St. James; sister, Freida Shackelford of Laurie; grandchildren, Clinton Nickelson (Kelly), Kristina Bernskoetter (Brian), Karen Gregory (Bryan), Ben Nickelson, Jacob Nickelson (Brittany Hager) and Noah Stites; and great-grandchildren, Trent, Julia and John Bernskoetter, Adeline and Zeke Nickelson, and Emma, Lily and Tucker Gregory. Along with his parents, Howard was preceded in death by son, Raymond; and siblings, Velbert, Ruby and Clarence Nickelson, Yvonne Kidd, Juanita Williams, and Mary Haydol. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Maupin Funeral Home in Fulton with Chaplain Jim Mueller officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Oak Chapel Cemetery.
