Shirley Montague Scott Payne, age 90, of Fulton, died Friday, April 7, 2017. Shirley was born on December 19, 1926, in Fulton. She was the youngest child of Harold and Kate (Smith) Scott. Shirley graduated from Fulton High School in 1945 and received a B.S. from Washington University in 1950. On January 21, 1950, she married Bruce Payne of Fulton. She traveled with her husband until he retired from the U.S. Navy in 1959, and they returned to Fulton. He preceded her in death in 1987. They had three children: Kathryn Payne, Sue (Bruce) Gray, and Mary (Tim) Osburn. Shirley taught at the School for the Deaf for over 20 years until her retirement. She actively participated in Girl Scouts and taught swimming for many years. Shirley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, PEO, and DAR. She enjoyed puzzles, knitting, quilting, and reading. She is survived by three children, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and her sisters-in-law, Ruby O. Payne (Mrs. Rupert Payne), Fulton, and Doris Payne Reed (Mrs. Murry Reed), Orem, Utah. Shirley was preceded in death by her brothers, John (1991) and Harold (2010), and her sisters, Mary Virginia Baker (2016) and Sue Gould (2005). The Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church in Fulton. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017 in Fellowship Hall, First Presbyterian Church.
