Margaret Elizabeth (Lander) Stack, age 93, formerly of Fulton,Mo., passed away Thursday, October 6, 2016, at University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia. Her family was with her throughout her five-day hospital stay. The care she and the family received from University Hospital staff was exceptional. Margaret was born in Fulton, Missouri, April 11, 1923, to Alma K. and Harvey L. Lander. She was the oldest, continuous parishioner of St. Peter Church in Fulton. During the Great Depression, Margaret quit school to help earn money for the family. She started as a laundress and later worked in the shoe factory before becoming a home maker. She met Maurice Stack when he came to Fulton to help build projects at Veteran's Park with the Civilian Conservation Corps. They were married September 11, 1942, in Seattle, Wash. She traveled there by bus, where Maurice was building hangars for Boeing. Maurice served in the infantry during the Battle of Bulge and spent 13 months in post-war Japan. Margaret was back home doing factory work in support of the war effort. After Maurice's second military stint in Germany during the Korean Conflict, they started their family. They adopted a son, Robert Maurice Stack in 1955, and a daughter, Renee Yvonne Stack in 1959. They also fostered many children over the years and loved them deeply. Margaret and Maurice were well known for their business, Callaway Lumber, their extensive volunteer efforts and their support for the Callaway Senior Center. They were also renowned for their love of country dance. They even took second place in a waltz competition at the Missouri State Fair. Margaret grieved deeply for the loss of her husband of 67 years, Maurice Stack, and her beloved son, Robert Stack. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Alma Lander; brother, Louis Lander; sister, Mary Ruth Taylor; and niece, Kyle Harris, as well as her Stack in-laws, including Leonard and Nora Stack, Loretta and Ray Sullivan, Lena and Sam Famous. She is survived by daughter, Renee (Tim) Graham of Columbia; daughter-in-law, Gwen Stack; grandchildren, Mandy (Michael) Holland and Jason Stack, of Fulton, and Eric (Shannon) Wright of Columbia plus two great-grandsons, Luke and Brett Holland and a great-granddaughter, Avery Grace Wright, due in March. She is also survived by brother, Millard (Thelma) Lander; sister, Patricia (Bob) Baker; sister-in-law, Mary Louise Lander and sister-in-law, Lenora (Paul) Shay, all of Fulton. She was blessed with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who adored her, including the staff and residents at Churchill Terrace. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, October 11, at Debo Funeral Home in Fulton. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 12, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Fulton. Interment to follow at Callaway Memorial Gardens. Margaret was a hard-working, down-to-earth, practical woman. She felt it made more sense for people to donate to good causes instead of buying funeral flowers. She would be quite pleased if, in lieu of flowers, people would donate to St. Peter Church Building Fund or the Callaway Senior Center. Online condolences may be offered at www.debofuneralhome.com
