Doris Jean Handy, 87, of Fulton, Mo., departed this life on Sunday, December 25, 2016. She was born on September 17, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo. Her parents were Russell F. Smith and Blanche M. Drew. During her early childhood, she was raised by her maternal grandparents, Lewis and Gertrude Brooks, in Tebbetts, Mo. She attended school in Kansas City, Mo., and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1946. During her adulthood she held numerous jobs: Occupational Therapist Aide - Fulton State Hospital, Parent Coordinator Head Start - Topeka Public Schools, Program Director Airmen's Club - Richards Gebaur Air Base, Reporter - Kansas City CALL, Assistant Director Press Relations - Insurance Information Institute, New York City, Housemother - William Woods University, Director - Fulton Day Care and Director C.A.N.-SERVE. After she retired, she worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (F.E.M.A.) for over 15 years. She also served on the Board of Jail Visitors for 12 years. She enjoyed traveling, genealogy, writing and art. She was an active member of Oakley Chapel A.M.E. Church in Tebbetts, Mo., where she was instrumental in dedicating the building as a State Historical Site. She leaves to cherish her memory five sons, Stephen (Kim) Ferguson of Atlanta, Ga., Ronald Logan, Donald Logan and Russell Logan of Kansas City and Herbert (Elaine) Logan of Garland, Texas; and one daughter, Jean Handy of Fulton. She strived to teach her 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren the values of life and the importance of making a difference. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 31, 2016, at Calvary Baptist Church, 227 East Sixth Street in Fulton. Burial will follow at Callaway Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 30, 2016, at Debo Funeral Home in Fulton. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Doris J.
