Dr. Betty Jean B. Martin, 89, of Fulton, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Boone Hospital after a short illness. Dr. Martin was born in Fulton, Missouri on January 12, 1925, the daughter of the late Jim and Dola (Grimm) Bryant. Dr. Martin was an educator all her life, teaching elementary school in Troy, Mo., then Chair of Home Economics Department at University of Missouri, retiring in 1991. She made a lasting impression on all her family, and was a kind and generous person. She helped many people not only in her personal life but in her professional career as a teacher and professor. She did her undergraduate work at William Woods College in Fulton and was a member of the William Woods Alumni Association as well as the MU Alumni Association. She held degrees as follows; B.S. in Home Economics from University of Missouri 1950, Masters of Education, from University of Missouri 1962, and Ph. D in Education from University 1973. Dr. Martin's career started at Linn Public Schools in Linn, Mo., then to Frances Howell High School in St. Charles, Mo., then to Silex High School in Silex, Mo, and from there to Troy RI School in Troy. She started at the University of Missouri as Instructor in the College of Education in 1968 to 1973. She was appointed to Assistant Professor in 1973 and then Professor. She is survived by her sister, Frances L. Bryant Deuel and husband Bill of Columbia, Mo.; nephews, Bill Deuel II (Bridgette) of Smithville, Mo., Chris Deuel (Sharon) of Kearny, Mo., Derrick D. Deuel (Teresa) of Millersburg, Mo., Roy Baker (Linda), Plano, Texas., and David Baker (Peggy) of High Ridge, Mo.; and nieces, Ann Breeding (Chuck) of Ankeny, Iowa, and Vickie Humphries (Pat) of Quincy, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Martin; and sisters, Peggy Baker and Shirley Means. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, February 28, 2014, at Maupin Funeral Home with Pastor Bruce Williamson officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
