Thomas C. "Tom" Gowans

Thomas C. "Tom" Gowans, 71, of Overland Park, Kan. and formerly of Sedalia, passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at his home after a long illness. He was born April 11, 1941, in Chicago, Ill. the son of Neil and Louise (Collister) Gowans. He grew up in Hams Prairie, and attended school in Fulton. Tom served in the U.S. Army, First Calvary, in Korea and was a life-time member of the V.F.W. He attended Lincoln University after his time in military service. He was blessed with many life-long friends. In 1964, he married Betty L. Twitchell who survives of the home; also surviving is daughter, Julia R. Martinez; son-in-law, Pete Martinez; grandson, Benjamin Martinez; and one brother, Allen Gowans of Fulton. Mr. Gowans was preceded in death by: his parents; and three brothers, Alec, Ernest and Bill Gowans. Funeral services were held at 12 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2012, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66210. Visitation began at 11 a.m. before services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Stanley, 14895 Antioch Road, Overland Park, KS 66221.
