Robert W. Bowen, 68, of Box Elder, formerly of Chadron, Neb., passed away at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Monday, December 16, 2013. Bob was born on May 30, 1945, in Valdosta, Ga., to Harold and Doris (Fieldhouse) Bowen. He grew up in Williamsburg, Mo., and graduated Kemper Military Academy in Booneville, Mo. A month after graduating, Bob was in a horse accident and suffered a spinal cord injury. Rehabilitation included stays at Columbia, Mo., and Craig Hospital in Engelwood, Colo. He attended college at Texas Tech in Lubbock, TX, and graduated from Chadron State College with a Bachelor's degree in Business Economics. Bob was a former owner of Lariat Liquor and Pine Ridge Gun Shop. He was a Federal Firearms Dealer until death. In 1977, he helped develop the sr-77 shooting rest for high injury quadriplegics. Over 220 rests were made and shipped around the world to help other hunters hunt again. Bob was a strong supporter and helped develop early programs to allow access for the disabled throughout the Chadron community. He was also a rocketry leader in local 4-H clubs helping many area youth. Bob will be remembered by his strength, perseverance, and love of life. A "Celebration of Life" Service will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at United Congregational Church in Chadron, Neb., at 10 a.m. with Paster Steve Lindsay officiating. Inurnment will be made at a later date. Survivors include: his wife, Jacqueline Bowen, of Box Elder; two sons, Wyatt [Chandra] Hans of Rapid City, S.D., and Callan Hans-Bowen of Lincoln, Neb.; sisters, Patricia Featherngill, Pamela [Dale] Anderson of Chadron and Susan Bowen of Custer, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Doris. A memorial has been established in lieu of flowers and donations may be sent to Bank of the West, Chadron, Neb.
