Dr. James Patrick "Pat" McGinnis, 89, of Moberly, passed away Friday, March 2, 2012, at Moberly Regional Medical Center following a short illness. Pat was born October 4, 1922, in Huntsville, to John J. and Mollie M. (Chesser) McGinnis. He graduated from Huntsville High School, Class of 1939. James married Lyla Jean Thomas on December 3, 1949, in Moberly. Tom and Margaret Burckhartt stood up with them during the ceremony. Mr. McGinnis served in the United States Army during World War II. He transferred from the 103rd Infantry Division to the Air Corps to become a B24 Bombardier. Pat graduated from the University Of Missouri, School Of Veterinary Medicine in 1955. He practiced Veterinary Medicine in Fulton for many years in partnership with Bob Basnett. After retiring from practice, Pat worked in Jefferson City as Assistant State Veterinarian for the Missouri Department of Agriculture. Dr. McGinnis was a member of the Fulton United Methodist Church. He was a Mason and 50-year member of the Shriners. He belonged to the American Legion and American Veterinary Medical Association. He enjoyed quail and pheasant hunting with Mollie, his bird dog, traveling with friends, refinishing hardwood furniture, restoring stained glass windows, crafting stained glass art, and spending time with family. Survivors include his wife, Lyla Jean McGinnis of Moberly; son, David Smith and wife Marcia of Rolla; sister-in-law, Marilynn McGinnis of OíFallon, Ill.; niece, Teri Rohr and husband Ray of Shiloh, Ill.; and great-nephews, Alan Everett Rohr and McKenzie Raymond ìMacî Rohr. Dr. McGinnis was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Patricia Jean ìP.J.î McGinnis; and brother, Everett T. ìMacî McGinnis. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Monday at Patton Funeral Home in Huntsville. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Huntsville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Huntsville City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the University Of Missouri School Of Veterinary Medicine.
