Edgar Henry Kummer, 87, of Ashland, went to be with his Lord Friday, January 6, 2012. He was born in St. Louis, on October 28, 1924. He married Margaret (Toogood) Kummer on July 14, 1945, and the couple raised seven children. Ed served in World War II as a First Lieutenant in the Army, 45th Infantry Division Thunderbirds, in the European Theater. He received three Purple Hearts, the bronze Star and was a POW for nine months. He was a St. Louis area Realtor for 60 years, serving as president. He was also a member of the Optimist and past state governor, a member of the American Legion Post 444, Forty and Eight, and VFW Post 4105. He was a member of Callaway Christian Church in Fulton and a follower of Jesus Christ. Ed is survived by Margaret and his children, Paula Breitenbach and husband Rich of St. Louis, Alexa Muller and husband Robert of Bristol, Conn., Rex Kummer and wife Karen of Chesapeake, Va., Mark Kummer and wife Mickie of Ashland, Joanne Hellman and husband Rich of West Chicago, Ill., Beth Beck and husband Rudy of Carpentersville, Ill., and Lisa Janowski and husband Mike of Algonquin, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Doris Witte and husband Robert of California. His parents, Paul and Mathilda (Barlbort) Kummer, and one brother, Paul Kummer, preceded him in death. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2012, at Callaway Christian Church, 2051 Silver Drive in Fulton with Minister Mark Kummer officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at Callaway Christian Church. Interment will be held at Callaway Memorial Gardens in Fulton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Callaway Christian Church adoption fund that children who have no family might be given that blessing.
