John "Jack" Edwards Marshall

John Edwards "Jack" Marshall, age 79, of Fulton, died Sunday, November 20, 2011, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born September 30, 1932, in Kansas City, Mo., to L. J. and Grace Edwards Marshall. Jack grew up in Kansas City surrounded by a large and loving extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. He graduated from Southwest High School in 1949, and went on to graduate from Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. with a degree in Political Science in 1953. After graduation he served two years in the United States Army stationed in Germany. In 1955 he began a long, successful and rewarding career with Westminster College starting as an Admissions Counselor. Subsequently, Jack served as Alumni Secretary and Director of Publicity, Dean of Men, Dean of Admissions, Vice-President for Development, Interim President and Secretary of the Board of Trustees. He was referred to by many as "Mr. Westminster". Jack was a loyal member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, receiving the Merit Key and Order of the Phoenix awards. In addition to his many activities at the college, he was very active in the Fulton community. He served on the Board of Associates of Fulton Colleges, Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society, Friends of the Library, Friends of the Churchill Memorial, Chamber of Commerce, State Hospital Board, Humane Society Board, and was a member of Kiwanis. Jack received numerous awards including the Westminster College Alumni Award of Merit, Alumni Achievement Award, Kingdom of Callaway Chamber of Commerce Loyal Subject Award, Association of Churchill Fellows, and a Resolution of Appreciation from the Fulton City Council. For his dedication, devotion and contributions, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Westminster College. Jack was a truly selfless man, a loyal and loving brother and friend. He had a passion for life which included a love of traveling, enjoying trips to China, Russia, Egypt, Europe, and numerous trips to England. Making all he was around comfortable and appreciated was a great attribute of his. Jack is survived by two brothers, Richard E. "Dick" Marshall and his wife Patti of Oklahoma City, Okla. and David E. Marshall and his wife Diane of Overland Park, Kan. In addition, he is survived by his nephews and nieces, Adam Marshall, his wife Allyson and their children Jackson and Keira of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; Holly Lawton of Prairie Village, Kan., Melissa Lawton, her husband Michael Wayne and their children Mick and Eliza of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; Betsy Roadman, her husband Eric and their children John and Drew of Lee's Summit, Mo.; Katie Marshall of Prairie Village, Kan.; and Jed Marshall of Prairie Village, Kan. He is also survived by his two beloved cats, Gracie and Gertie and a number of loving friends; and cousins, particularly Patty and Ned Kehde of Lawrence, Kan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jack Marshall Scholarship Fund at Westminster College, 501 Westminster Avenue, Fulton, MO, 65251.
