Herbert M. Schmid

Herbert M. Schmid, age 97, of Portland, Missouri, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2011, at the Riverview Nursing Center in Mokane, Missouri. He was born April 1, 1914, in Portland, Missouri, the son of Adolph and Nancy (McClatchey) Schmid. On November 15, 1939, he was united in marriage to Alma Laube Schmid who survives at their home. Herbert was a farmer all of his life. He served in the United States Navy during WWII as an electrician's mate. He received his High School Diploma on the GI bill after his time in the Navy. He worked as an electrician and in his younger years on the river. Herbert was very active in his community. He served on the following boards; Callaway Electric Cooperative, Central Electric Power Cooperative, Steedman Bank, Soils and Water Board, South Callaway RII School District, Farmer's Home Administration, Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association, Portland Community Center. He was a member of the Mokane Masonic Lodge for 72 years. He attended the Pleasant Hill Free Methodist Church and Steedman Methodist Church. He enjoyed woodworking and traveling. He was especially proud to have traveled to every state in the union. In addition to his wife of 71 years, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by one son, Charles Schmid of Portland, Missouri and one daughter, Nancy Hinnah and her husband, Don of Portland, Missouri; seven grandchildren; Robbie Schmid, Robbyn Horstman, Richard Hinnah, Rebekah Hinnah, Russell Hinnah, Randy Schmid and Christy Schmid; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Calvin Schmid of Fulton, Missouri and one sister, Ethel Mirts of Fulton, Missouri and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Maupin Funeral Home in Fulton, Missouri, with Reverend Earl Fuller and Reverend Beth Duckworth officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at Maupin Funeral Home in Fulton, Missouri with Masonic services at 5:30 p.m. Interment will be held at the Callaway Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
