Tigers extend baseball win streak

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Another day, another walk-off win for the Missouri baseball team.

The Tigers won on a walk-off dropped fly ball off the bat of Connor Brumfield in the 13th inning to give Missouri a 7-6 win Wednesday against Chicago State at Taylor Stadium.

Missouri (16-1) - off to its best start in program history - boasts a 16-game win streak, the most consecutive wins by the Tigers since 1981.

Even as Missouri finished 9-0 on its longest homestand of the season, coach Steve Bieser felt there were a lot of things the Tigers did wrong Wednesday.

"This is the first time that I've said to the team that it was a very dissatisfying win," Bieser said. "You hope to be hitting on all cylinders and playing great baseball heading into conference play. I don't know if I've been part of a more poorly-played game than what we did today."

Matt Berler started the bottom of the 13th inning with a single to left field and Brian Sharp followed with a single through the right side.

After Alex Samples drew a walk to load the bases, Brumfeld hit a fly ball to left field. Chicago State's Jacob Vanitvelt couldn't make the catch, allowing Berler to score the winning run.

The Tigers led all game until the eighth inning, when Chicago State plated two runs to tie the game at 4.

The score would stay that way into the 11th inning, when the Cougars took their only lead at 6-4 with a pair of runs. Missouri answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out, two-run double by Brumfield to tie the score again at 6.

Missouri led 3-0 early, scoring two runs in the second and one more in the third.

Berler and Sharp each collected three hits for the Tigers, all singles. Berler added two RBI and two runs scored. Brumfield drove in three runs, all in extra innings.

Sharp, who started the game at first base, earned the victory in relief. He pitched a scoreless 13th inning and struck out two. Missouri pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts in the win.

Starting pitcher Bryce Montes De Oca went five innings and allowed one run on two hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Tuesday's game against Chicago State was canceled due to cold weather and will not be rescheduled.

Missouri opens Southeastern Conference play Friday at Alabama. The first game of the three-game series is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
