MEXICO, Mo. — The Fulton Lady Hornets volleyball team encountered a variety of outcomes in their preview for the 2017 season, going 1-1-1 in Saturday's jamboree scrimmages at Mexico High School.
Fulton — led by senior outside hitter Kate Pani's three kills and three digs — started play with a 15-11, 15-11 loss to North Central Missouri Conference rival Mexico. The Lady Hornets then bounced back with a 15-7, 15-6 triumph over Brookfield, receiving four kills from Pani and nine assists from sophomore setter Chloe Breedlove.
Fulton then ended the day by splitting with Montgomery County, prevailing 15-11 in the first game and bowing in the second game 15-12. Breedlove topped the Lady Hornets with five assists and three digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Taylor Hagens also tallied three digs.
"In the first game (against Mexico), we were able to get the jitters out of the way," first-year Fulton head coach Hannah Oestreich said. "We're still getting used to each other, but we progressed throughout the day and the consistency is coming along."
The Lady Hornets — looking to regroup after struggling to a 4-22-1 finish in 2016 — start the season with a tripleheader at Centralia on Tuesday, Aug. 22. The freshmen play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the junior varsity and varsity matches.
"I'm excited — I think we've got a good year coming," Oestreich said. "We're hoping to turn things around."
