Gilmore advances, Schmitz ties for 17th

EUGENE, Ore. - Andy Gilmore advanced to the finals in the men's high jump Friday at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Gilmore, a native of Ashland and a graduate of Southern Boone High School, cleared 7 feet, 1/4 inch on his second attempt to advance to Sunday's final.

He is one of 14 qualifiers for the final. All 14 advanced by clearing the same height after 12 other jumpers failed to clear that opening mark in the event, which was held during rainy conditions.

Gilmore, 36, qualified for the Trials by clearing 7-3 in the Show-Me State Games last year.

The high jump final will start at 5 p.m. (CDT) Sunday.

Vera (Neuenswander) Schmitz failed to advance to the finals Friday in the women's pole vault.

Schmitz, a three-time state champion at Jefferson City High School, cleared the opening height of 13 feet, 111/4 inches on her opening jump. But Schmitz then missed on her three attempts at 14-31/4 to finish in a tie for 17th among the 24 vaulters.
