Boys' basketball: Bulldogs down Newburg to win Belle championship

BELLE - The South Callaway Bulldogs' recent surge now features a championship.

Senior guard Treysen Gray delivered 17 points as South Callaway captured the title of the Belle Tournament with a 62-48 triumph over the Newburg Wolves on Friday night.

The victory was the fourth straight and sixth in the last seven games for the Bulldogs (8-9). South Callaway built a 14-6 advantage after one quarter Friday night and outscored Newburg 15-8 in the second quarter to expand its lead to 29-14 at halftime.

The Bulldogs then outscored the Wolves 21-15 in the third quarter to go up 50-29.

Gray - who was named the tournament's most valuable player - directed three players in double figures for South Callaway. Junior forward Caleb Hall provided 16 points and senior guard Dylan Paschang - selected to the all-tournament team - finished with 11.

The Bulldogs have received the seventh seed for this week's 35th-annual Sturgeon Tournament. South Callaway opens against No. 2 seed Sturgeon in the first round at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the high school gym.
