Girls' basketball: Lady Bulldogs outlast Fatima in OT, win second straight SMC title

WESTPHALIA - The South Callaway Lady Bulldogs needed a little extra to acquire a second straight unbeaten Show-Me Conference title.

Freshman guard Raegan Brown responded with a game-high 28 points and South Callaway outscored Fatima 12-9 in overtime to secure the SMC championship with a 72-69 win to end the regular season Wednesday night.

South Callaway improved to 18-6 overall and completed SMC play with a spotless 8-0 mark. The Lady Bulldogs forced overtime when sophomore guard Paige Clubb hit two free throws with 2.1 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 60-all.

"We went in as last year's defending conference champion with a whole new group," South Callaway head coach Darren Humphrey said. "These girls are glad to get another conference championship to hang on the banner.

"I couldn't be more proud of them."

South Callaway quickly fell behind 20-8 after one quarter, but outscored the Lady Comets 23-14 in the second quarter to narrow the gap to 34-31 at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs then outscored Fatima 14-10 in the third quarter to go in front 45-44.

South Callaway got the game to overtime despite being edged by the Lady Comets 16-15 in the fourth quarter.

Clubb also supplied 21 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who made 21-of-26 free throws.

"We had to play with a sense of urgency," Humphrey said. "We were a little shook in the first quarter, but we came back from that and showed exactly what we're made of, and the amount of heart that we have."

Bridget Holterman and Lauren Brandt sparked Fatima with 24 points apiece.

South Callaway is the fourth seed in next week's loaded Class 3, District 9 Tournament in Linn. The Lady Bulldogs face No. 5 seed Father Tolton in the quarterfinals at 8:30 p.m. Monday.

In Monday's other quarterfinals, No. 7 seed North Callaway plays No. 2 Blair Oaks at 4 p.m., No. 1 California squares off against No. 8 Linn at 5:30 and No. 3 Fatima clashes with No. 6 Southern Boone at 7.
