Wrestling: T-Birds also advance five wrestlers to state championships

North Callaway's Delashmutt wins District 3 title

HIGGINSVILLE - North Callaway senior Jordan Delashmutt won the title at 220 pounds to guide the Thunderbirds wrestling team to a sixth-place finish at the Class 1, District 3 championships Saturday.

Delashmutt and four other North Callaway wrestlers - junior Jadon Henry at 138, senior Chet Cunningham at 152, sophomore Grant Wright at 145 and freshman Blake Whipple at 120 - advanced to the state championships beginning Thursday at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

Henry and Cunningham both took second at the District 3 championships, while Wright and Whipple each finished fourth.

Delashmutt (34-9) - a two-time state qualifier - compiled a 4-0 record at 220 on Saturday, including three wins by pin and one by decision. He topped off his title run by pinning Father Tolton's Conner Fogue in 1 minute, 51 seconds in the championship.

Henry (28-2) went 2-1 at 138, picking up two pinfall victories. He was forced to injury default the title match to Hallsville's Andrew Huddleston.

Henry is a three-time state qualifier and became North Callaway's first-ever medalist last year with a third-place finish at 132.

Cunningham (39-15) tallied a 3-1 mark at 152 on Saturday, including two wins by pin and one by decision. He was pinned by Marceline's Cullen Bruner in 5:36 for the championship.

Wright (26-18) finished 2-2 at 145, battling his way back through the consolation side of the bracket after being pinned by Hallsville's Lucas Pemberton in 3:20 in the quarterfinals. Pemberton also pinned Wright in 3:38 in the third-place match.

Whipple (29-20) produced a 2-2 record at 120, also working his way through the consolation portion following a 5-2 quarterfinal loss to Brookfield's Quinn Gladbach. Whipple was blanked by Gladbach in a 7-0 decision in the third-place match.

Cunningham, Wright and Whipple will all be newcomers at the state championships.

Junior Mason Wortman (195) and junior Victor Daniels (132) both had their seasons come to a close for the Thunderbirds on Saturday.

Wortman (33-15) reached the semifinals at 195, but was pinned by Tolton's Montgomery Mills in :56. Wortman then bowed in a 6-3 decision to Richmond's Ryker Plymell in the consolation semifinals.

Daniels (8-20) was eliminated in the consolation second round at 132 after being pinned by Palmyra's Grayson Stevens in 1:20.

North Callaway accumulated 90 points. Marceline wrapped up the District 3 team championship with 205.5 points.

The first round of the Class 1 state championships starts at 9 a.m. Thursday at Mizzou Arena.
